ExpressJet First Officers are committed to providing an exceptional level of service to our passengers and mainline partners while upholding our vision by putting safety first in everything they do.  While a First Officer’s primary function is to assist the Captain, they must possess the confidence and excellent decision making skills needed to provide leadership as future Captains at ExpressJet.  The job duties include but are not limited to:


  • Education and experience:
    • Must be between 21 - 65 years of age as listed in 14 CFR Part 121.383(e)
    • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent
    • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language
  • Authorization to work in the United States:
    • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship
    • Valid passport (must be available on the first day of training)
    • Travel documents that allow the bearer to freely exit and re-enter the United States (multiple entry status)
  • Minimum Flight Experience:
    • Commercial pilot certificate with multiengine and instrument ratings
    • Flight time requirements as listed in 14 CFR Part 61.159 / 61.160
      • 1500 total time (1250, 1000, 750 rATP)
      • 25 multiengine airplane
  • Requirements before a job offer can be made:
    • FAA First Class Medical Certificate
    • FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit
    • Verification of education, background, NDR, criminal history, and reference checks
    • DOT/FAA required drug test


  • Responsible for the safety and security of the aircraft, passengers and cargo as second-in-command
  • Conduct preflight inspection of aircraft
  • Attend preflight briefings
  • Assist with preflight preparations including setup of navigation, obtaining weather and route clearance, review of dispatch release, flight plan and NOTAMS, and coordination with cabin crew to ensure all service items are complete
  • Assist with flying duties
  • Communicate with ATC during all phases of ground and flight operations
  • Maintain familiarity with ExpressJet SOPs and ensure electronic manuals and documents are up-to-date
  • Make announcements as needed and instruct passengers in the event of an emergency
  • Assist crew with emergency evacuations and coordination
  • Conduct post-flight inspection of aircraft  


  • 100 hours flight experience within the preceding 12 months
  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited 4-year college preferred
  • Part 121 experience preferred
